Could you walk after tearing your meniscus?
I just found out that my knee pain is, in fact, a torn meniscus. I have heard people day that they were walking with no problems shortly after a meniscus injury. It's been a month for me and I'm still on crutches! It sucks. I have a 3yr old and a 3 month old and had to borrow a wheelchair from my neighbor to be able to take care of my kids during the day without my husband.
My ortho gave me a cortisone shot 2 days ago and I was under the impression that I'd be able to use my knee a bit more. It didn't seem to do anything (except almost make me pass out upon receiving it!) I wonder if the physical therapy regimen he gave me will help more. Maybe it's that my muscles are weak from me using crutches for a month?
Does anyone have any similar experiences? I guess I need to hear especially from someone that had a torn meniscus without immediate surgery. I appreciate ANY thoughts though. Thanks!
Mensical tears are rarely severe enough to disable someone from walking, but they certainly can be painful. Yet, many people are walking around with them and don't even know it....
Tears larger than 7 mm rarely do well with conservative care. Your self immobilization certainly isn't helping the situation because degneration actually accelerates as you immobilize and avoid weight bearing (although in case of significant injury, it certainly is necessary).
Many times, after the injection, physical therapy becomes much more beneficial. The combination of the two treatments, IMO, seems to often be more beneficial for the more "stubborn" cases. In the end, however, we must realize that not everyone can be helped by PT. Best wishes.
