My son is in a wheelchair, how can his school evacuate him in case of fire when he is on an upper floor?
My son is 15 weighs about 125 pounds, he cannot walk. He has several classes on uppper floors. The school cannot use the elevators for a fire emergency or drill. What products or suggestions are available? They can carry him-he is not very comfortable with this. He has Muscular Dystrophy. He is an "A" student and I think he is embarrased to be carried by people.
I would explain that I understood those feelings( not comforatble being carried) but his safety is your MAIN concern especially re: some sort of evacuation.
I would have it as part of your IEP......for each class that is upstairs I would have them make a specific plan(where he would go...which staircase and ect...)....so in the midst of chaos...your son will know where he needs to go and the school will follow that plan accordingly( one would hope). Have the meeting, include your son.....and set clear instructions on what should happen.
