Am I the only one who has difficulty finding transport for the disabled people with mobility problems?
In my area of Manchester there is 2 door to door services. These services are for the general public and have to be pre- booked. Often those with mobility problems, especialy those who use a wheelchair , do not get a booking.
This means I cannot go out very often. Or when and where I want to go. Although I have a power chair I can only use this for short local trips due to lack of sloping curbs and busy roads, and the weather.
I am often stuck in for months, and miss appointments including opticians, G.P hospital, etc (hospital transport is a nightmare to organise.) And I am unable to socialize and be as independent as I can be.
Am I the only one effected by The lack of disabled transport?
What can be done about the problem?
Hi I live in Texas. I have problems too. I found a system that works but their buses are so rough they nearly kill me. Part of my problem is that I live in a rural area and it is about a hundred miles to the specialists that I have to have. This system is set up by the state. It's called "City And Rural Rides" or C.A.R.R. medicaid pays for it if it is to the doctor, but it costs a lot to go shopping or anything. They have lifts for my scooter and like I said they always show up. The dr.s I see are bone spec., pain spec., heart spec. my regular dr. is only 30 miles away but riding makes me hurt so bad it usually puts me to bed for 2-3 days. It sometimes takes up to 6-8 hours to go to the dr. 30 miles away because they have to pick-up people from all over the place. Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it. I have no one that can help because no one has a van with a lift. If I had a disabled van I could take myself some places and I have people who would drive if I couldn't. I too spend months alone in my apartment. I have care attendants come in about 4 hours a day. Anyway I've whined enough and I usually don't, it's just been a long weekend. Check with the state there should be something out there.
