Wheelchair accessible Trucks/SUV's?
My boyfriend is a high functioning Quadrapalegic (no use of legs, limited use of hands, but good arm strength and movement). We are thinking of purchasing a truck or SUV since he loves going to the dunes and mudding! Our current truck is a Lifted 92 REGULAR Cab Chevy, so it is definitely not handicap accessible.
We are not sure where to begin on this! What is the best way to get him in this vehicle (ie: a lift) A couple questions:
Do we need to get rid of the back seats of a full size pickup so that he can fit the entire wheel chair in it? if we remove the Driver seat, is it (and the back seats as well) easily put back in so I can drive it? or carry passengers at some point?
What set up is good for something like this?
What brand is good for lifts?
Any insight on this subject would be much appreciated!! Please help! If you have any ideas, any thing that might help that i didnt ask about PLEASE let me know.
Thanks in advance!
You should contact an adaptive/mobility equipment dealer in your area. They can point you towards vehicles that may already be adapted and for sale, or suggest to you vehicles that would be easy to adapt, along with approved equipment to do so to your new or current vehicle. You can find a Quality Approved member Dealer of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association through:
http://www.nmeda.org/directory/qap_members.html
You may want to read through their "A Consumer's Guide to
Purchasing Adaptive Vehicles and Equipment" at http://www.nmeda.org/consumers/consumer_guide.html
Be aware that many vehicle manufacturers have assistance programs to help reimburse the costs of adapting one of their new vehicles to be accessible to those with limited mobility. Links to manufacturers' rebate programs: http://www.nmeda.org/consumers/rebateprograms.html
