i ride my bike a lot of my two "sit bones" get sore. which is better, padded shorts or a seat pad?

what is effective?
what brands do you recommend, etc?

As a girl, I can probably give you better advice than guys! If you are sore, get cycling shorts, especially since you are doing some major miles! A soft seat will feel great for a mile or so, but what happens is that you put a tremendous amount of pressure on your labia (yes, I said labia ok) as you sink down into all that cushy padding. This results in some very unpleasant numbness that then turns to pain. On a firmer, higher quality saddle, you will frequently find that the center of the seat is cut out to eliminate pressure, and that the part of the saddle you actually contact with your sit bones is raised up a bit from the nose of the saddle. This keeps you sitting at the right angle without squishing the soft parts.

Trek and Specialized now have a custom saddle fitting service wherein they measure the width of your sit bones and find the right saddle for your particular anatomy. Just be aware that a really good saddle can run around $100, but boy is it worth it!

So, invest in several pairs of good quality shorts or tights AND a good saddle. Your bottom will thank you.
