Design details Operating mechanism The vz. 58 field stripped The locking system features a declining breech lock hinged from the bolt and housed in the bolt shipper that contains two locking lugs which descend into and slot in locking shoulders in the receiver's internal lead banister. The weapon is unlocked by the short tappet-like stroke of the agent rod as it strikes the bolt hauler and drives it rearwards. After 22 mm (0.9 in) of unrestricted travel, an wedge-like surface on the bolt transporter moves under the breech locking allotment and lifts it up and out of engagement with the locking recesses in the steel body. The breech locking bite swings up and this movement provides the leverage required for first extraction. The breech block is then passed rearwards taking out the blank sealed unit casing from the chamber. A settled ejector passes through a furrow cut in the underside of the bolt and the casing is flung upwards clear of the gun.
