Why is the voltage at the alternator terminal different then that at the battery?
I have an 84 dodge d100 that I am having charging issues with. The alt and battery checked out ok at the auto parts store and voltage regulator was replaced after I started to have issues. The problem is that I am getting around 2 volts less when checking across the battery then when I check the alternator terminal to ground. At idle I have 13-14 volts coming out of the alternator but across the battery terminals I am only getting 11-12 volts. When I did a full field test I get 15-16 at the alt and 13-14 at the battery. My first thought was that the was a bad connection or corroded wire but I checked the resistance from the alternator terminal to the positive terminal and it reads 0. Also checked the ground resistance at the battery and it read 0 as well. Thanks for any help.
DO A VOLTAGE DROP TEST. START THE VEHICLE. HOOK A POSITIVE LEAD FROM A VOLTMETER TO THE BATTERY POST,NOT THE CABLE. NEXT HOOK THE NEGATIVE LEAD FROM THE VOLTMETER TO THE BATTERY CABLE END AT THE BATTERY. IT SHOULD READ ZERO. ANY READING INDICATE BAD CONNECTION. LAST, DO THE SAME THING AND THIS TIME HOOK THE NEGATIVE LEAD TO THE ALTERNATOR WIRE. ANY READING INDICATE RESISTANCE IN THE WIRE
