Can Diesel locomotives be used to generate electricity as they transport freight products?
http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/customers/commodities/bioenergy/?keywords=miles The CSX website states, "CSX trains can move 1 ton of freight almost 500 miles on one gallon of fuel." Why could there not be boxcars fitted with generators that are feed from the axles. As the axles turn, they drive the generators to make energy. There could also be large batteries to store the energy. This stored energy could be downloaded to a grid device when the train stops. I know the generator(s) would create drag, but would it be any more than the tons of freight the engine(s) already move? I know the generator and batteries would add extra weight, but would it be any more than the tons of freight the engines(s) already move? CSX gets paid to move freight. They get paid (by the customer) for the fuel they use. What are your ideas??
Diesel engines already generate electricity, and that is also the main job of a non operating diesel, to generate electricity
