our dog keeps growling at my sister?
He doesn't growl at anybody else and his hair stands up when she touches him. I think it is something to do with how she smells. He is a black lab mix. I also theorized that he forgot who she is because she is out of the house with work or school most of the day..but that didn't fly because I don't live with the dog, he lives with my parents and siblings. I live 110 miles away from them. I visit about once a month and he still remembers me. She has never hurt the dog in any way, yet I have scared the crap out of him numerous times. One being when he chewed my flash drive 2-3 years ago. I put him in his cage and slammed a chair on the door until it broke. Yet he still does not growl at me. To this day he hides when he knows I am upset, but when I am not upset, he is friendly and I play with him, give him food and water...
Keep in mind that I am looking for answers as to why the dog growls at her, not comments on how mean I was 3 years ago.
A dog's first and finest sense is that of smell. There is likely something she uses, perfume, deodorant, hair gel, soap, or such that has a different odor than the rest of the family. It may even be something that she eats. Dog's are naturally suspicious of anything or anyone that has a different odor. For instance, sometimes we think our dogs don't like a certain race or culture..but it is usually the cultural food that they eat, making them have a different scent.
Other breeds don't trust my Afghan hounds, as they have a totally different scent than most breeds, and it is confusing to dogs of a different breed. However, when we go to a lure-coursing meet, Afghans immediately are attracted to each other, and will happily race as a team with two Afghans that are 'strangers'.
You can help your dog and sis make friends. If your sister will get a small foil pack of cat treats, and toss a couple toward your dog each time she comes into the room..your dog will soon learn to look forward to seeing her. She doesn't need to make verbal overtures, but only toss her a treat or two.
She might say something, such as, "good boy" before she tosses the treat, and he will begin to listen for her. (I use cat treats, as they are tiny, not messy, and have a strong aroma)
It can move from there to other interactions. Walking a dog on a leash is a great bonding experience. It shows the dog that there is joy in accepting the human's dominance and companionship.

My mother loves dogs. However, when she visits, my dogs don't trust her, as she wears a cologne with a *musk* base. I'm allergic to musk, so there is normally none in our home.
