patchwork with embrodery - embossing?
Hi there...I am wanting to try out patchworking. I havn't really done it before but i am thinking about making a cushion - standard size out of maybe 16 sqaures of material. I was thinking about buying patterned material and then embroydering (sorry about the spelling) over some of the patterns of the material to give it more of a 3D look. I don't know if this is sort of quilting?
Anyway, can anyone give me some tips for a beginner? I don't expect it to be perfect 1st time but i thought i'd just give it a go.
It's spelled "embroidery", should you want to look it up.
In many crazy quilts, fancy embroidery stitches are used along the seams of the fabric pieces, and sometimes embroidery is also added to some of the pieces. Here's a couple of examples:

As you can see, the use of elaborate embroidery stitches allows the quilter to show off her needlework. Many of those stitches would be extremely tedious to work, if one was trying to embroider a dress or something, but when they're used in very small seams they can still have a lot of punch without worrying whether the first stitches are the same size and shape as the last ones.
I advise you to go to the library to get some quilting and embroidery books. These crafts have been around for a long time, so you don't need the newest books. The old techniques will serve you well. Also, try buying craft books from used book stores, rather than buying them new. Very few craft books are worth buying new.

There are many, many quilting websites out there. Just use a search engine. Similarly, there are sooooo many embroidery sites online.
Another starter project would be to make some quilted placemats, but I wouldn't advise embroidering them. You could make the placemats and table runners from the same pattern, or use a different pattern in each placemat, but use the same group of fabrics.
