How do you use the moment of inertia?
I know the equations for it and how they vary depending on the shape of the rotating object, but I still don't know how to apply the equation in a physics problem.
For instance, if there is an object sliding down a ramp, and there is a rope attached to the object and the other end is wrapped around a solid disc, how would you use the equation to figure the value of the tension in the string?
I prefer to alternatively call it "rotational inertia", because that gives you a better understanding of its simple uses, and doesn't make you question what a "moment" in general is.
It simply replaces mass in the equations of dynamics for bodies undergoing rotational motion. Look at the analogies:
Translational ... rotational
Fnet = m*a ... tau_net = I*alpha
p = m*v ... L = I*omega
KEtrans = 1/2*m*v^2 ... KErot = 1/2*I*omega^2
