Mobility Scooter: Advantages of this medical Miracle
What are the kinds of aids for the purpose of mobility for a patient? If your answer is wheelchair, think again. A mobility scooter is an aid which is similar to a wheelchair but looks like a scooter with a motor in it. These mobility scooters are of two types. The first type is a 3 wheel travel scooter. There is another type of scooter which is a 4 wheel travel scooter. The first medical mobility scooter was invented by Allan R. Thieme in 1968, in the town of Bridgeport, Michigan. The first scooter was built in Allan's own house. He was individually motivated to create this unique device to help a member of the family who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Medical mobility scooters are of two types. One is the front wheel drive (FD) and the other one is the rear wheel drive (RD). The front wheel drive scooter is smaller of the two and is the preferred one for moving within the house. The other one is a rear wheel drive which is used to carry heavy people and can carry weights as specified by the manufacturer of the scooter. Here are a few advantages:
• One of the biggest advantages of these motor powered scooters is that they are a real boon to the people with the problem of moving around. For people who are either physically disabled or have a broken limb or even elderly people who lack the strength to move around can enlist the services of mobility scooters.
• These scooters being small and powerful can help people to operate even in small places and are suited for the people who live in small places.
• Being more affordable than a wheelchair certainly goes in the favor of this medical mobility scooter.
• Unlike the conventional wheelchair, the foot need not be moved at all. Due to swiveling action of this scooter, it is easier to turn and move. This is especially a boon to the people suffering from partial or complete body disabling circumstances.
• Many people are conscious of a wheel chair. But with the mobility scooter, this is no longer a problem as it resembles like a normal scooter.
• The design of a mobility scooter is such that it ensures comfort. It has a firm seat over three or four wheels depending on the design chosen. It also has a broad and a smooth area for the person to keep his or her feet. To steer the wheels, there is a provision of handle bars.
• Initially operated by batteries, the medical mobility scooters are now being run on electricity instead of gas or an external source. This makes it easier as one can get the scooter charged without taking it anywhere or spending money on it.
• To move the mobility scooter to any direction or to even go forward or backward is easy. One requires only the thumb pads and controls operated by your finger to do the needful. This is easy and therefore can be done even by elderly men and women.
