Potential Power Issue?

I have a Clevo 17 " M570-U style note laptop it runs windows XP home and has 1gig ram with an ATI Mobility X1600 graphic card...

Anyhow I can play and operate the machine just fine when its unplugged and running on battery power...Also it runs and plays games like Halo for windows BUT,when the power supply is plugged into the wall,World of Warcraft will start and run for only about 5 minutes then the screen goes all black and the entire system crashes forcing me to reboot via the power button : (

. Warcraft runs beautifully and with no hitches when the machine is unplugged and running only on battery power....

Can anyone tell me why that or or give me an educated guess as to potential solutions ?

Thanks

One possibility (and I think it's only a very small one) is that something is wrong with the AC adapter. Maybe it has blown a capacitor or diode inside and is passing really dirty, crazy, all-over-the-map current to the notebook. I think that's probably not it, but it's the first thing that comes to mind assuming there's nothing running when the computer's plugged-in which isn't running when it isn't...

...but, sadly, that assumption can't be made. Many notebook makers include utilities that do things like turn off Aero in Vista (I know you're using XP, but I'm just giving an example), or turn off certain system tray (notification area) programs, or background services, when the machine is running on the battery. So doing is, of course, to preserve as much battery power as possible.

If something is running when the notebook is plugged-in to AC power, that is not running when it's not so plugged; and if that something, when running under AC power, just happens to conflict with the game, then there's the problem, right there.

Also (and this may actually be what it is), many notebooks do more than just make the video more dim when its on battery power. To achieve longer battery life, certain internal video features are disabled when the machine is on battery...

...and perhaps one of the things which isn't disabled when the machine is plugged-in to AC power happens to conflict with the game.

That, actually, is my strongest suspicion...

...followed by that something is running in the background (either a system tray item, or a service or something) when the machine is plugged-in to AC power, that is not running when the machine's on battery...

...followed by my last suspicion: A faulty AC adapter.

Heaven forbid that it's actually some kind of weird combination of two or more of those possibilities. Then you'd REALLY have a tough time figuring it out.

Resolving this problem is going to take some seasoned detective work, even if it's only one of them... detective work of which I suspect you're incapable... else why in the world would you ever ask such questions in a place like this.

That being the case, you're going to need to take the machine to a professional...

...and the sad truth about that, these days, is that the so-called "professionals" anymore tend to be kids working in the tech department of a BestBuy who couldn't punch their way out of a technological paper sack, and who think the fix for everything is to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows.

So, unless you can find a real wizard -- someone like me, frankly -- who works in an independent computer repair shop (which I don't), then you may have trouble finding this one.

But I wish you luck with it, in any case.

Hope that helped.
