Why do cats growl? Have you ever known a cat to be like a dog?

I've had 3 cats in my lifetime, the one I have now I rescued when she could fit in the palm of my hand and she is now 7yrs (in people time) She is the only cat I've had that growls. Let me give you an instance: We were just now laying on the couch when someone knocked at my door, she lifted her head up and started growling!!! She's done this before, once on a summer day, I had my door open and my screen shut and her and I were sitting on the recliner watching t.v. and my dad came to the door and when he walked in, she started growling at him! Once he came over and said hi to her, she was fine. Just wanted to see if anyone has ever had a cat that does this? I am assuming she's trying to protect me?? LOL. She is definitely one of a kind.

Hi!
I have five cats and everyone of them is a 'one of a kind' in some form or fashion. One of them does 'growl' when he is not agreeable, though he is a rather small sized and it certainly doesn't sound very vicious at all :)
For some reason we don't know, he does not like my daughter at all and if she comes towards him he will start the growling. Some of the others will 'growl' at each other at various times.
As for why? Same reason as dogs growl...they detect a threat and are warning you(or whatever seems threatening), and once they find out it was not really a threat they are fine.
Mine all have very distinct personalities.....I find it fascinating to watch them and how they interact with each other and people.
