Why are the locomotive shells built so incredibly heavy duty?
I noticed that the sheet metal on locomotives is really thick and every other aspect like hand rails is extremely heavy duty. Why is that? I can of course understand why the frame needs to be heavy duty, it's pulling the entire train, but why is everything else so thick and heavy?
Its a good way to add weight for traction and i lasts a long time! Look at some of the gp38's still out there built in the late 60's to early 70's and still look like a champ! Thanks to heavy sheet metal and heavy duty grab irons they just don't wear out! You also haft to look at collisions and derails If they are made heavy duty you don't haft to spend tens of thousands on just body work.
